ACT, the dreaded test that determines your future, is here for you to take. Do well, and you get scholarships and get into your college. Do poorly and you have to take it again. However, this last year the scores were higher than recent years at Cameron High School. In fact, CHS students were at or above state average in three out of the four sections, math being the only section they were below average. CHS had 92 students take the test, and they raised the percent of the students meeting college readiness benchmarks in all areas by seven percent.

Though scores were up, students admit some sections of the test are tougher than others.

“Reading was tough, because you have to read fast and efficiently while answering questions over it,” said Senior Kemper Kellerstrass, who has taken the test 9 times. “Math was easy though because there is one clear answer and the use of a calculator helps a lot.”

There are teachers and staff members to help their students prepare themselves for the test for their college career. There are also classes teachers supervise and offer ACT preparations. Cameron Test Coordinator Mr. Green thinks those classes are key in student success. “I encourage dual credit classes in high school because they are college level classes,” says Mr. Green. "I think the scores were higher because of the students taking college preparation classes."

“I encourage students to take the ACT test because it will tell them where they are at and if they are college material,” says Principal Mr. Gerber. “I think it is important for students to strive to do their best and it is important to know where they are at so they know what to work on. I think the scores were higher because of the hard working teachers and the students giving it their best. Our school has the Zaps program that is one of our top ACT prep classes.”

The hardest section of the test for students according to the scores was the science section, but there really wasn’t an overall winner of the "easiest" section. All the students know is the test can be a life changer and a key determiner for getting into college. There are sections that can stump us and there are sections that can be a piece of cake and though the ACT is an important test in a high school student’s career when he or she wants to prosper in life, students can’t let it control them. They just need to give it their best and hopefully they will get the score they really need.
