The boys’ hoopsters concluded their strong regular season this week with games against Hamilton, Westchester, and Palisades. Senior Deirunas Visockas padded his already incredible statistics with great games that assured his first-place finish in Western League assists (he is second in scoring).

Fellow captain Ethan Grush is running away with the three-point shooting race, with teammate Kenton Lee a distant second.

The Hamilton Yankees were easy meat for the Wildcats on Tuesday and proved their inferiority by quickly falling behind by twenty points.

Visockas led the way with nineteen points and eight rebounds, and the Yankees were unable to get the score closer than ten.

The defense held its ground against the physically intimidating Leonard Hooper (a 6’8” behemoth who dunked four times) and league-scoring leader Elan Williams.

The final score was 57-43, a score that makes the game sound much closer than it really was.

The junior varsity also defeated Hamilton for their first league win. Clutch three-point shooting by juniors Armin Moosazadeh and Michael Frasier sealed a thrilling 41-39 come-from-behind victory.

“It’s great to finally win a game,” said Moosazadeh.

“Hamilton was a solid team, but we had a fine team effort to pull out the win. We hit the big shots when they counted [although Moosazadeh airballed an important free-throw with only seconds remaining], and generally played well,” he said.

Both teams came crashing back to earth when they played perennial power Westchester on Wednesday, however.

The varsity got off to a slow start, scoring only ten points in the first half.

They picked up the scoring after the break—they matched the Comets’ second-half production—but it was too late.

Although Visockas was held to only eight points, Kenton Lee picked up some of the slack with a twenty-two-point tear that included five three-pointers.

Despite the lopsided 82-50 loss, coach Steve Ackerman was excited about the playoffs.

“This is one of the best teams I’ve coached, and certainly one of the best years we’ve had,” he said before leaving for Westchester.

The Wildcats play their final regular-season game today at Palisades, with the prize being a third place finish in the Western League.

The team has already locked up a playoff spot, but will look to improve their ranking against a very beatable Dolphins squad.
