The Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble combined on May 24 for their Spring Concert in Stivelman Theater.

Organized by Performing Arts Chairman Arthur Shane, the show featured pieces from each individual group, as well as songs showcasing their joint talents. The two instrumental groups were also joined by the Chorus, under the direction of William Gee.

“It was a really exciting night, as it was my final concert at Uni,” commented senior Gabriel Ramirez. “Performing with these people was a big part of my four years of music here. I’ll miss it.”

The concert contained a wide variety of music, ranging from classic baroque music to spirituals and modern funk. Selections from the Orchestra included Bach’s Brandenburg Sinfonia and part of Mendelssohn’s Fifth Symphony.

The Jazz Band, meanwhile, played such tunes as Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight,” and Thad Jones’ jazz standard “A Child is Born.”

The concert included more than just performances by the school ensembles, however.

Orchestra member Peter Hayes, senior, also performed a piano solo, Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in G Minor. A guest ensemble, including senior Jazz Band members Ismael Bustamante and Abraham Barrios, played the Beatles’ classic “Let It Be.”

Shane invites more students to join the music program. “We’re always looking for more musicians at the school,” he said. “ This was the last concert for several important members.”
