Former alumni and members of the band, “The Magruder Machine,” assembled to celebrate former teacher John Magruder in a musical tribute.

The thirty-five-piece band played a number of his hits—such as “Zim”—as well as his arrangements.

Gary Pratt, a former student of Magruder’s and a professor of music at the California State University, Northridge, conducted the commemoration in Stivelman Theater on June 29.

Music Director Arthur Shane and former Uni principal Jack Moskowitz opened the memorial with a reminiscent speech.

“We didn’t have a funeral,” said his wife, Joy. “John didn’t want a funeral.”

“He didn’t want people to be sad,” she added. “We thought people should think of the good times.”

Magruder’s commitment to the preservation of music education can be continued by sending donations to The Henry Mancini Institute and The University High School Education Foundation (Department of Music).
